This Poolhouse Kitchen by Workhop/APD Has a "Wet Bar" Where Swimmers Can Grab a Drink

The owners and their grandkids use it all summer long.

We kept calling it ‘going to camp,’ ” says Matt Berman, the cofounder of New York City–based design firm Workshop/APD, of his clients’ new poolhouse at their Long Island home. “They wanted to create a place where their kids and their grandkids would want to come all summer, like, ‘Let’s go to grandma and grandpa’s. We have fun there!’ ”

To turn the property into party central, Berman and his team coordinated with the architects at Harrison Design on an open-air poolhouse featuring a modern kitchen and ample space to lounge and play games. Bifold windows that separate the outdoor bar and cooking area can be drawn completely open, so damp kiddos can pad up for a snack and cold drink.

While the palette is dominated by marine blues, the kitchen materials skew organic. “We talk about the ‘hand’ of a material the way people talk about the hand of a fabric,” the designer says. The gray marble has “so much energy in it,” while the navy subway tile is glazed in a way that lends luster and depth: “It doesn’t feel too machined. It’s got a little bit of texture.”

Grandkids might have been the inspiration, but now, says Berman, the couple “lives by” the pool—and uses this kitchen exclusively during the summer months.

“Ceilings are often the forgotten plane,” says Berman. His team placed wide panels of white oak along the ceilings, then punctuated them with slim black canister lights over task areas. Sofa and coffee table: custom, Workshop/APD, fabricated by Naula. Wallcovering: Calico.

“Upper cabinets make a kitchen look like a kitchen,” Berman laments. “They always feel heavy to me.” Readily available plates and glasses are more convenient for guests. Tile: Fireclay Tile. Cabinets: custom, Duffner & Voight, in Ammonite, Farrow & Ball. Flooring: custom-cut cleft bluestone tiles.
